Press release: GENIVI Alliance supports community projects... - Europa Press

SAN RAMON, California, 19 September 2012/PRNewswire / - GENIVI Alliance, an Association of the automotive industry and electronic consumption driving the development and adoption of a reference open In-vehicle platform Infotainment (IVI), today announced that its development of components becomes new public open source community projects sponsored by the Alliance.

All the code specified for compliance with GENIVI is, and will continue to be made up of approved open source components. Today, 95% of the GENIVI compliance software components is already adopted or adapted from existing open source projects.

When the Alliance was initially unable to find a home in the community for some components, GENIVI had originally developed this "in-house" software. Through these projects supported recently created, the components now will develop in the FOSS (Free and Open-Source Software) community.

The first three projects are Layer Manager, Audio Manager and Automotive DLT (Diagnostic Log and Trace). More technical information about these projects is available at www.genivi.org [http://www.genivi.org/].

During his opening statement in the Automotive Linux Summit of the Linux Foundation in Gaydon, England, Matt Jones, Vice President, GENIVI and technical leader of Next Generation Infotainment Systems, Jaguar Land Rover, said: "Moving our code internal to the public model of open source community development activities, GENIVI expected to simplify the contribution of its members and become involved with individual taxpayers in community FOSS which are not members." "The benefit for developers of open source is freely available access to automotive software advanced, an opportunity to directly contribute to its development, and clear a path for the adoption of this technology by related industries." Adding: "the benefit for GENIVI is a level of increased interest and activity towards the goal of the Alliance of a common software for IVI infrastructure".

The Linux Foundation, the non-profit consortium dedicated to the growth of Linux and FOSS, will offer professional services to accommodate all the GENIVI sponsored projects.

"Giving GENIVI centralized resources for hosting your code, can help to increase collaboration in the Linux community and open source", said Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation.

All projects will be maintained by GENIVI throughout his life in the open source environment. When it deemed beneficial, GENIVI can also merge specific projects with other existing successful community projects to foster development.

In addition, the Alliance also sponsor new projects of "incubation" for IVI software automotive in the open source community. These projects will encourage the development of experimental technologies and initial phase that are consistent with the mission and technical scope of the Alliance, but not currently part of the GENIVI compliance specification.
